Manager selection: questions before conviction
A practical way to look beyond a compelling track record or presentation.

A compelling record can be the beginning of a discussion, not its conclusion. Selection becomes more durable when a manager’s process, incentives, and portfolio role are understood with equal care.
Start with the source of return
We ask what the manager believes, how that belief becomes a portfolio, and which conditions would challenge the approach. A strategy should be understandable before it is persuasive.
The right question is not simply whether a manager has performed. It is whether the result can be explained, assessed, and owned in a wider portfolio.
Examine the operating reality
Team continuity, ownership, capacity, risk controls, transparency, fees, and implementation all influence the value delivered to an investor. These are investment questions, not secondary details.
Judge the fit
Even a capable manager may not serve a specific mandate. We consider the expected role, risk contribution, liquidity, correlations, and the practical conditions under which the relationship should be reviewed.
